Puffin
Photograph by J. Glen, 2016
Puffins are sometimes referred to as 'clowns of the sea' due to their
brightly coloured beaks and their somewhat clumsy, waddle-like walk.
However, the vivid colours of their beaks serve an important purpose—they
are used to attract mates. During the breeding season, the beaks become
even brighter, functioning as a visual signal to potential partners.
This display is a key part of their courtship rituals.
