Puffins on coastal Iceland
Photograph by B. Hildebrandt, 2015

Iceland is home to one of the largest puffin colonies in the world. Around 60% of the global puffin population breeds in Iceland, particularly along its southern and western coasts. These small seabirds are known for their colourful beaks and distinctive flying style, which involves flapping their wings rapidly to stay airborne. They are also great divers, using their wings to 'fly' underwater while hunting for fish.
