Basílica del Voto Nacional, Quito Photograph by M.O.G.G., 2011 |

| The basilica the largest neo-Gothic structure in the Americas, with construction starting in 1892, although it remains unfinished. It is inspired by the design of Notre-Dame de Paris, with its architects drawing heavily from the French Gothic style, particularly the grand scale and soaring spires characteristic of the famous cathedral. Its architectural grandeur is marked by pointed arches and intricate stone carvings, all emblematic of the neo-Gothic style. One of the most distinctive features of the basilica is its gargoyles, which are not traditional European figures but are instead inspired by Ecuadorian wildlife. Sculptures of armadillos, condors, and turtles reflect the country’s rich natural heritage, setting the basilica apart while still adhering to the architectural principles of French Gothic cathedrals. |
