A door in Mérida
Photograph by M.O.G.G., 2015

A carved grotesque on a door in Mérida, Mexico. Such symbols, with exaggerated features including protruding tongues and wide eyes, were used either to ward off or mock evil, spirits, and misfortune, preventing them from entering the building, or to poke fun at sin, pride, and evil.
