Carnival Fasnet
Photograph by Coloeur, 2019

Observed before Lent in parts of south-west Germany, eastern Switzerland, Alsace, and western Austria, Carnival Fasnet follows Swabian-Alemannic traditions rather than the Rhineland style. It is characterised by wooden masks, hand-sewn costumes, guild organisation, and tightly regulated rites passed down for centuries, with each town guarding its own forms and meanings.
