In the early nineteenth
century, American furniture drew on French interpretations of Greek
and Roman designs, as seen in design manuals and journals. This
couch, with its curving silhouette, mahogany veneers, and boldly
scrolled armrests (modern upholstery), exemplifies the Grecian Plain
style popular from the 1820s to 1840s. Its upholstery was replaced
in modern times. |
