Portrait of a Burgomaster's Wife
Oil on panel, 98 x 66 cm, Dutch school, c. 1600–20
Hall i' th' Wood Museum, Bolton, UK

A companion to Portrait of a Burgomaster by the same artist, the subject of this painting has been identified as Cécile van Vorssen, born in 1584. She is depicted in a black dress with a white lace collar, her right hand resting on the table, while her left holds a key, possibly symbolising her role as the lady of the house and her responsibilities in domestic affairs. Both portraits share the same background and mirrored composition.
