A figure composed entirely
of fruits, vegetables, and plants creates the profile of a man, set
against a sky of soft clouds, capturing the late Baroque taste for
allegory and visual illusion. Emerging from the lingering influence
of Mannerism—where exaggerated forms and imaginative compositions
were prized over naturalistic depiction—this work is painted in the
style of Giovanni Stanchi, whose botanical still lifes tend toward
decorative richness. The composition reflects a clear debt to
Giuseppe Arcimboldo, though Stanchi’s approach is generally more
ornamental and less fantastical. The profile of a
woman painted in the same manner accompanies
this work. |
