Horseshoe Bend with the meander of the Colorado River
Photograph by Gert Boers, 2016

Over millions of years, the relentless flow of the Colorado River has carved a vast curve into the surrounding sandstone, creating a striking natural spectacle known as Horseshoe Bend, in Page, Arizona. Towering cliffs rise more than 300 metres above the winding river, their rugged, stratified surfaces displaying layers of red and orange rock shaped by time and erosion. The river’s waters, shifting in colour from deep blue to vibrant green depending on light and sediment, contrast vividly with the arid desert landscape. This immense geological formation reflects the power of natural forces, with the river continuously shaping and reshaping the terrain. The sheer scale of the bend, combined with the dramatic drop from the cliff’s edge, offers a breathtaking perspective on the vastness of the American Southwest.
