Mule Canyon, part of the Cedar Mesa area near Blanding, Utah, is renowned for its Ancestral Puebloan habitation sites. The Ancestral Puebloans, also known as the Anasazi, inhabited the Four Corners region, including parts of present-day Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico, from approximately 200 to 1300 AD. Mule Canyon features several well-preserved cliff dwellings and structures that reveal aspects of their ancient way of life. One notable site is the 'House on Fire' ruins, named for the vivid orange-red hues of the sandstone cliffs that resemble flames when illuminated by the sun. Built from sandstone blocks and natural mortar within a sandstone alcove, the site creates this striking visual effect during mid-morning hours when sunlight interacts with the striated rock patterns. The dwelling includes storage granaries and living areas, offering valuable insights into the builders’ lives and their adaptation to the arid environment.
