An active volcano situated in the states of Puebla, Mexico, and Morelos (elevation 5,426 m/17,802 ft), Popocatépetl is named from the Nahuatl word meaning 'the smoking mountain.' Popocatépetl is a warrior in Aztec mythology who was in love with the Princess Iztaccihuatl. Her father promised that she would marry him if Popocatépetl returned victorious from war. Before his return, a jealous rival told Iztaccihuatl that Popocatépetl had been killed in battle, and she died from grief. Upon his return, Popocatépetl carried Iztaccihuatl's body to her grave on a great mountain, where he knelt before her until he himself died from grief. The gods covered them with snow and transformed them into mountains.
