Hanging Rock, also known as
Mount Diogenes or Dryden’s Rock, rises dramatically from the plains
near Mount Macedon, Victoria, Australia, its jagged outcrops evoking
a sense of ancient mystery. The formation was created about 6.25
million years ago by a volcanic eruption from solvsbergite, a
variant of trachyte closely related to basalt but with a slightly
different mineral composition. Steeped in Indigenous lore and
colonial legend, it gained international recognition through Joan
Lindsay’s novel and Peter Weir’s haunting film adaptation |
