The Three Sisters rock formation
Photograph by Si Thu Aung, 2019.

Rising from the Jamison Valley, the Three Sisters rock formation in New South Wales stands as a sandstone trio formed during the Triassic period and shaped by erosion over millions of years. Seen from Echo Point, the stepped profiles alter in colour through the day as conditions across the escarpment change. They are named after an Aboriginal story in which three sisters, Meehni, Wimlah and Gunnedoo, were turned to stone to protect them during a tribal conflict, but the transformation was never reversed, leaving the rock formation as a permanent presence above the valley.
