The bacterium that causes Q
fever, Coxiella burnetii, is a highly infectious obligate
intracellular microorganism commonly found in livestock such as
cattle, sheep, and goats. It is typically transmitted to humans
through inhalation of contaminated dust or aerosols from animal
waste or birth fluids, making it a zoonotic pathogen with worldwide
distribution. It typically leads to flu-like symptoms, but in more
serious cases it can develop into pneumonia or hepatitis. |
