The image of chemist James
Hyatt was reproduced in his 1855 schoolchildren’s textbook The
Elements of Chemistry to demonstrate the medicinal application
of chlorine gas through a simple inhalation device, presenting
scientific practice to young readers while placing chemical
instruction within the wider culture of nineteenth century science
education. Over a life spanning eighty seven years, Hyatt remained
actively engaged with chemistry, botany, physics, geology,
astronomy, and meteorology, frequently experimenting with other
gasses and continuing to promote scientific study in its many forms
until his death. |
