The animated at the Cat and
Fiddle Arcade in Hobart, Tasmania, opened in 1962. Every hour it
performs a 30-second musical arrangement of the nursery rhyme 'Hey
Diddle Diddle', played on glockenspiel and vibraphone, while the
animated electro-mechanical display includes the cat playing the
fiddle, and the appearance of the jumping cow and the laughing dog
from behind the moon, and the dish with a spoon running off from
behind the cat. The arcade occupies the site of the former Cat and
Fiddle Alley, an 1817 colonial lane named after the nearby Cat and
Fiddle Tavern, a rough inn frequented by whalers and seamen. |
