Coronal mass ejection erupts on the sun
The filament of solar material had been hovering in the sun's corona, and it eventually erupted into space, travelling at over 900 miles per second. It connected with Earth's magnetic environment causing the appearance of an aurora on 3 September 2012. Image taken in August 2012 by NASA.
