| Pere Borrell del Caso (1835–1910) | ||||||||||
| Born in Puigcerdą, Catalonia, Borrell del Caso was a painter and engraver who studied at the esteemed Escola de la Llotja in Barcelona. A relatively obscure artist, he favoured Realism over the Romantic style prevalent at the time. He specialised in portraits and painted some murals, but he became best known for his trompe-l’œil works, with Escaping Criticism remaining his most celebrated piece. In 1897, he founded his own art academy, the Sociedad de Bellas Artes, where he encouraged students to paint en plein air—a practice still uncommon then. He also championed contemporary Catalan artists, striving to broaden their reach. Borrell del Caso died in Barcelona. | ||||||||||
