David Young Cameron (1821–1887)

Born in Glasgow, Cameron was a painter, etcher, and draughtsman who, after abandoning a career in law, studied at the Glasgow School of Art and, in 1885, at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. He became a noted etcher and a leading figure in the British Etching Revival. In 1895 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers. A prolific artist with exceptional draughtsmanship, he specialised in landscapes and architectural scenes, distinguished by their strong, dramatic tones. One of Scotland's most influential artists, Cameron was appointed King's Painter and Limner in 1933. He died in Perth.
