Also known as The Miracle
of the Lactation, this scene was depicted by multiple artists
during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Bernard is shown
kneeling in reverence before the altar, with a cardinal observing
the event. He prays to the Virgin, seeking proof of her maternal
care, and she miraculously responds by lactating, directing a stream
of milk into his mouth. This miraculous act symbolises the
impartation of divine wisdom and grace, strengthening Bernard’s role
in advocating for Marian devotion. Cano captures the moment with a
sense of solemn reverence, highlighting themes of divine motherhood,
spiritual nourishment, and the mystical union between the Virgin and
her devotees. |
