Charles Conder (1868–1909)

Born in England and later emigrating to Australia, Charles Conder studied in Melbourne and Paris. He absorbed elements from Monet’s spring landscapes and the traditions of Whistler and Beardsley, yet developed a style entirely his own. He employed colour in a subtle, lyrical manner, conveying the wistfulness of Watteau, the haunting quality of Whistler, and the playful audacity of Beardsley. His art adorned fans with a delicate, dreamlike atmosphere, establishing him as their preeminent master. The treatment of space and aerial distance in his work is enchanting, and his rhythmic compositions evoke the music of viols and lutes in an old-world terraced garden near Versailles. Conder also produced charming lithographs, and his seascapes exhibit much of Whistler’s nuanced tonal values. He died in Surrey, England.
