Christ's Entry into Brussels in 1889 Oil on canvas, 252.6 x 431 cm, by James Ensor, 1888 Getty Center, Los Angeles |

A chaotic carnival-like procession in the city of Brussels, filled with masked figures, clowns, political banners, allegorical and historical figures, and also Ensor’s own family and friends, where the crowd appears crude, noisy, and grotesque. At the centre, Christ rides almost unnoticed, suggesting that spiritual truth and genuine morality are ignored amid mass spectacle, hypocrisy, and social disorder. The scene acts as a satire of contemporary society and politics, presenting the crowd as blindly driven while the figure of Christ, partly reflecting Ensor himself, stands isolated and disregarded. |
