Jacob de Gheyn II (c. 1565–1629)

A Flemish designer, painter, draughtsman, and engraver, de Gheyn was born in Antwerp. He was taught drawing by his father, a glass-painter, and learned engraving under Hendrik Goltzius. His engravings were known for their fine, bold style, and his drawings were both precise and tasteful. He created numerous engravings, both from his own designs and after the works of other masters, and his prints were highly regarded. It's unclear how much of his work was actually executed by his son, who also became an accomplished draughtsman and shared the same name. One of his paintings is believed to be the first known Dutch vanitas still life. The Stadholder Prince Maurice was a great admirer of his work and commissioned many pieces from him. De Gheyn died in The Hague, where he had moved in 1605.
