Folio 159v from this manuscript (catalogue number Ms. Ludwig IX
13) depicts saints in ceremonial robes, each marked by symbolic
attributes: Peter clutches a key and a book, representing his
foundational role in the Church; Paul bears a sword and scripture,
symbolising his martyrdom and theological authority; close by, a
virgin martyr holds a palm leaf, an ancient symbol of victory over
death. Together, they form a unified call to the broader communion
of saints. |
