Guido Gonin (1833–1906)

The son of artist Francesco Gonin, Guido was born in Turin and initially studied under his father. He became known for his genre scenes and portraits, as well as for his work as a lithographer. Through his father’s influence, he was introduced to the court of Turin and gained access to the middle class. He exhibited regularly at the Società Promotrice di Belle Arti di Torino from 1849 to 1866. In the late 1860s, Guido moved to Paris, where he became highly sought after as a designer of fashion illustrations for various publications. Despite his time in France, he remained unaffected by French painting, instead focusing on genre works featuring seventeenth-century costumes. In 1861, he won a prize at the Exposition of Florence for his lithograph Portrait of the King. Guido died at Aix-les-Bains.
