Otto Greiner (1869–1916)

Ernst Otto Greiner, a German painter, draughtsman, and graphic artist, was born in Leipzig and grew up in challenging domestic circumstances. After completing his elementary studies, he trained as a lithographer while also taking drawing lessons. In 1888, he moved to Munich, where he studied painting under Alexander Liezen-Mayer. In 1898, he travelled to Florence and then Rome, where he became friends with the artist Max Klinger, whose influence would be significant on his work. Greiner eventually settled in Rome, where he created much of his output, but returned to Munich in 1915 after Italy entered the war. His most important contribution to art was in lithography, although he also completed portrait paintings, influenced by Böcklin and Klinger, as well as engravings. Known for his keen observation and fidelity to reality, Greiner developed a realistic style for both his portraits and fantasy works. He remained indifferent to Impressionism and often expressed a deep reverence for the human form, depicted through his mythological and allegorical subjects. He died in Munich.
