Hans Holbein the Elder (c. 1460–1520)

Holbein, a German painter born in Augsburg, was a history painter influenced by Martin Schongauer, and may have been his pupil at Colmar. He was the main figure of the realistic movement in the Swabian school. Later in his career, his work showed the influence of the Italian Renaissance. His brother, Sigismund, who first appeared in the rate-books of Augsburg in 1504 and moved to Berne in 1519, likely collaborated with him on several projects. Sigismund died in 1540 in Berne. Holbein died in Isenheim, Alsace. See also Hans Holbein the Elder.
