By the Sea. A Spring Day Oil on canvas, 54.5 x 33.5 cm, by Bruno Liljefors (1860–1939) Nationalmuseum, Stockholm |

| A view across the river towards Grez-sur-Loing, capturing the village’s subdued charm. Liljefors spent brief periods in France in the 1880s, visiting the artist colony in the village. During one visit, he was struck by a sense of peaceful renewal and the vivid vitality at the riverside. He expressed this in this painting, where the scene is distilled into a tranquil study of the river’s water and reflections, its surface painted in layered blue and grey strokes that catch the pale light. In the foreground, part of a small boat and a leaning tree with thin, golden branches frame the scene, while the far bank dissolves into soft, earthy tones.. |
