Portrait of a Lady Oil on canvas, 49.5 x 40 cm, by Raimundo de Madrazo, 1885–95 The National Gallery, London |

Possibly a study, this
portrait is unfinished, though it already reveals with clarity the
quality that secured Madrazo's prominence among portraitists. Here,
his subject appears in three-quarter view with a lowered gaze,
wearing a bonnet encircled by a wreath of wheat and a prominent bow
at her neck. The muted browns soften her features, while the
patterned background adds texture and a sense of inward composure. |
