Portrait of a Girl
with a Valhoedje Watercolour and pencil on parchment, 7.7 x 5.1 cm, by Joseph Marinkelle, 1778 Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam |

| A young child in formal attire, wearing a tall, conical valhoedje—a traditional Dutch cap that, while functional, was also a deliberate marker of youthful propriety and social decorum. Its exaggerated height and decorative pom-pom reflect the cultural conventions of childhood presentation in bourgeois households of the period. The subdued delicate tones and graceful brushwork are characteristic of Joseph Marinkelle’s manner, in keeping with the Rococo tradition in Dutch miniature portraiture of the period. |
