| Damiano Mazza (fl. c. 1570–90) | ||||||||||
| Little is known about the life of Mazza, who is known for his association with the Venetian school. He was born in Padua, where he first studied painting before moving to Venice to work under Titian, whose style he absorbed and imitated with notable success. A historical painter, he spent most of his career in Venice producing works for churches, though his most admired painting was The Rape of Ganymede, completed in Padua with such refinement and richness of colour that it was long thought worthy of Titian himself. He also produced religious works. Mazza's career was cut short by an early death, probably in Venice, at a time when many believed he had the potential to stand alongside the greatest Italian masters. | ||||||||||
