The Five Senses: Touch
Oil on panel, 19.6 x 24.4 cm, by Jan Miense Molenaer, 1637
Mauritshuis, The Hague

An allegorical and slapstick depiction of touch as one of the Five Senses, a popular theme in art, particularly during the Northern Renaissance and the Baroque period. The woman strikes a man on the head with a wooden shoe in what appears to be a tavern. The man, likely drunk, winces as he gazes in our direction. Another figure, a man reclining at a table, seems amused by the situation, wearing a slight grin.
