Adriaan van der Hoop's Trotter De Vlugge ('The Fast One') in the Meadow
Oil on canvas, 60 x 54 cm, by Anthony Oberman, 1828
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

Dutch banker and art collector Van der Hoop owned racehorses and commissioned paintings of his champions. In this portrait, the animal is shown in profile, rendered in cool, luminous tones within a measured composition. It stands in a meadow on Van der Hoop’s Spaarnberg estate near Santpoort, with Haarlem’s Sint-Bavo church rising faintly in the distance.
