Still Life with Flowers and Nuts
Oil on canvas, 37.2 x 44 cm, by Anthony Oberman, c. 1830
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

This painting captures the essence of Romantic-era still life with its simple yet effective composition, soft colour palette, and focus on native plants. The arrangement includes a variety of Dutch flowers, such as primulas, geraniums, periwinkles, forget-me-nots, and nasturtiums, as well as greenhouse varieties that were in vogue during the 1830s, including daffodils, anemones, tulips, and hyacinths. A particularly interesting detail is the blue tulip, which was originally purple, with remnants of its former red hue still visible. The flowers are placed in an earthenware pot set atop a smooth grey marble surface, with a walnut and hazelnut resting to the left of the arrangement.
