Matthijs Pool (1676–1740)

Poole was a Dutch engraver, draughtsman, and publisher active in Amsterdam during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He went to France, where he was instructed in engraving in Paris. Upon his return, he engraved several plates after various masters, in a style resembling that of Bernard Picart. He was known for his collaborations with prominent artists of the period, including Gerard de Lairesse and Abraham Genoels. Having engraved a diverse range of subjects, including topographical prints, religious scenes, military battles, portraits, genre scenes, and illustrations for art treatises, his work reflects the stylistic transition from Baroque dynamism to more restrained classical forms. Poole married the daughter of Romeyn de Hooghe, another influential printmaker. He died in Amsterdam.
