Ilya Efimovich Repin (1844–1930)

Repin was a Russian painter born in 1844 in Tschuguev, in the Charkov region, to a family of modest means. He began his artistic training under a local religious painter named Bunakov, earning a living for three years by painting icons. In 1863, he was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg, where he studied for six years, won the gold medal, and received a travel scholarship that allowed him to visit France and Italy. After a brief period abroad, Repin returned to Russia and focused entirely on subjects with strong national themes. In 1894, he was appointed professor of historical painting at the St Petersburg Academy. Repin’s work is notable for its confident draughtsmanship, imaginative content, and powerful dramatic expression, combining precise realism with emotional intensity to capture both the physical presence and inner life of his subjects with remarkable clarity. A gifted colourist and one of the leading portraitists of his time, he was also recognised for his talent as a sculptor and etcher. He died in Kuokkala.
