Bernardo Rico y Ortega (1825–1894) Born at El Escorial, Bernardo
Rico was a painter and wood engraver, and brother to the more renowned
Martín Rico. He studied under Madrid of Vicente Castelló and Calixto
Ortega at Madrid, and he began his career engraving for Spanish newspapers
and cultural magazines. He afterwards exhibited different types of engravings
at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts of 1856, but had little success.
He continued to exhibit and was finally awarded two third-class medals
in 1858 and 1864, and an award in 1866. In 1882, he became artistic
director of La Ilustración Española y Americana, and later, president
of the Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid. Rico also illustrated novels
and history and travel books. The quality of his engravings were somewhat
criticised in the late 1860s, as was his subject matter, but he was
praised for his drawing and attention to detail. He continued to engrave
up until his death, which took place at Madrid. |
