Juan Sánchez Cotán (c.1560–1627)
A pioneer of Baroque realism in Spain, Fray Juan Sánchez Cotán was one of the most renowned Castilian painters not connected with the royal court. Born in Orgaz, Toledo, he joined the school of Bias del Prado, where he gained distinction for his exceptional skill in painting flowers and other still-life subjects. In 1603, he entered the Carthusian monastery of El Paular, near Segovia, where he produced numerous works. Sánchez Cotán later moved to the Charterhouse of Granada, where he created his finest works between 1615 and 1617. Upon his death in Granada, he was honoured as 'one of the most venerable monks, as well as one of the best painters of Spain.' He is most remembered for his still-life paintings, celebrated for their remarkable realism and depth, which surpass the quality of his religious works.
