Pieter van Sompel (c. 1600–after 1644)

Little is known of Van Sompel, a Flemish copperplate engraver and etcher born in Antwerp, who was active in Haarlem at least until 1644. He studied under Pieter Claesz. Soutman, whose style he adopted, and he also engraved several of his works. Van Sompel is particularly remembered for his series of portraits of imperial figures and other Habsburg rulers. His works often carried the influence of contemporaries such as Anthony van Dyck, marked by clarity of form and emotional depth. He was praised for the fine detail and treatment of his work, with the needle technique he applied to some pieces creating a delicacy that made them resemble ink drawings. Van Sompel died in Haarlem.
