Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863–1923)

Born in Valencia, Sorolla was a Spanish painter whose Impressionist-influenced style beautifully captured the bright coastal light of his hometown. Orphaned at a young age and coming from a humble background, he showed artistic promise early on and trained at the Academy of San Carlos in Valencia, later continuing his studies in Rome and Paris. While he began with historical and social realist subjects—his painting Otra Margarita from 1892 brought him early attention—he became best known for his lively genre scenes and landscapes, blending Impressionist techniques with storytelling. Sorolla's 1909 solo exhibition at New York’s Hispanic Society earned him wide acclaim and the opportunity to paint President William Howard Taft. After returning to Spain, he made his home by the Mediterranean, where the dazzling sunlight inspired his celebrated beach scenes, full of vivid colour, bold contrasts, and energetic brushwork. Sorolla died in Cercedilla..
