The Shepherdess Oil on canvas, 58 x 52 cm, by David Teniers the Younger, 1650s The State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg |

| Accompanying Teniers' other painting on the same theme, Shepherd, Teniers gives careful attention not only to the costumes and accessories but also to the surrounding landscape. The shepherdess, holding a tambourine—a common instrument in pastoral dances—embodies the ideal of harmony between figure and setting. This balance of human form and idyllic surroundings contrasts sharply with the figure of a coarse shepherd in the background, depicted in the style of Adriaen Brouwer. While the main figures are idealised, the shepherd’s portrayal is deliberately less flattering. |
