The Shepherdess
Oil on canvas, 58 x 52 cm, by David Teniers the Younger, 1650s
The State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg

Accompanying Teniers' other painting on the same theme, Shepherd, Teniers gives careful attention not only to the costumes and accessories but also to the surrounding landscape. The shepherdess, holding a tambourine—a common instrument in pastoral dances—embodies the ideal of harmony between figure and setting. This balance of human form and idyllic surroundings contrasts sharply with the figure of a coarse shepherd in the background, depicted in the style of Adriaen Brouwer. While the main figures are idealised, the shepherd’s portrayal is deliberately less flattering.
