Aztec tzompantli (skull rack)
Stucco replica, 19th century, Templo Mayor, Mexico City.
A Mesoamerican construction of poles where skulls were
placed after holes had been made in them. The heads were
usually of war captives and sacrifice victims. In Tenochtitlan,
the heads of Spaniards and their horses were to eventually
grace the racks there.
