Luigi Valperga (1754–1819)

Beyond his professional output, little is known about the engraver Valperga. Hailing from Turin, he was active in his native city and, from 1785, also worked in Paris. In 1789 he was named engraver to the king of Sardinia and received a royal pension. His work mainly consisted of portraits, allegorical scenes, and genre figures based on the works of other artists. Valperga portrayed royalty, prominent French figures, and other notable individuals, translating the essence of the originals into prints that captured both likeness and character without dramatising or romanticising his subjects. His portraits, however, sometimes appeared overly formal, impersonal, and severe.
