Winter Oil on panel, 14.6 x 37.1 cm, by Adriaen Pietersz van de Venne, 1625 Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam |
||||||||||
| Formerly known as Amusement on the Ice, this work is part of a larger series by Van de Venne illustrating the four seasons. It depicts a lively winter scene, with skaters on the right gliding across a frozen landscape, distant windmills and buildings dotting the horizon. The left side contrasts the serenity of the skaters, with people and a dog relieving themselves against barren trees. As with many Dutch Golden Age painters, Van de Venne often blended humour and satire into his work, challenging societal norms by presenting the rawness of human behaviour alongside more idealised or refined depictions of society. |
