Simon Verelst (c. 1644–1721)

Born in The Hague, Verelst became well-known as a painter of flowers and fruit, carefully copying them from nature. By 1669, he had moved to England, where he quickly gained success. His works became very popular, were highly admired, and sold for higher prices than any similar paintings in London at the time. The Duke of Buckingham became his patron and, in a lighthearted gesture, encouraged him to try portraiture. To support Verelst, the duke sat for his portrait. However, the finished painting was heavily adorned with flowers and was mocked when exhibited. Despite this, Verelst’s style remained in demand, especially for portraits that featured fruit and flowers, for which he was well paid. His skill in painting flowers and fruit was exceptional, particularly in his use of light and shadow. His portraits, however, are considered of lesser quality, though his floral and fruit embellishments still stand out. Verelst died in London.
