Hydrangea paniculataris Grandiflora
Chromolithograph, by Abraham Jacobus Wendel, 1879
National Agricultural Library, Beltsville, MD

Though portrayed in a somewhat idealised manner by Wendel, he presents an accurate portrayal of a Hydrangea paniculata ‘Grandiflora’ bloom. Commonly known as Peegee hydrangea, it is a hardy deciduous shrub known for its large, cone-shaped clusters of creamy white flowers that gradually turn pink with age. Interestingly, this hydrangea variety can continue blooming well into the autumn, providing colour long after many other shrubs have faded.
