Machu Picchu, often referred to as the 'Lost City of the Incas', is an ancient Incan citadel nestled high in the Andes Mountains of Peru, renowned for its breathtakingly scenic location and remarkable architectural ingenuity. Built in the 15th century but abandoned shortly thereafter, this UNESCO World Heritage Site remained hidden from the outside world until its rediscovery by American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911. Its purpose and the circumstances surrounding its abandonment continue to intrigue historians and archaeologists, while its terraced fields, intricate stone structures, and panoramic vistas draw inquisitive travellers from around the globe, making it one of the most renowned and enigmatic archaeological sites in the world.
