Brideshead
Revisited
1981
television series
The 1981 television series Brideshead Revisited,
a British drama produced by Granada Television, was adapted
from Evelyn Waugh's 1945 novel of the same name. The series
spans eleven 50-minute episodes and was originally broadcast
on ITV. It centres on Charles Ryder, a young and ambitious
art student who becomes entangled with the wealthy and complex
Flyte family during the 1920s and 1930s. The narrative explores
Ryder’s deepening friendship with the charming but troubled
teddy bear-clinging Sebastian Flyte and his evolving relationship
with Sebastian’s sister, Julia Flyte. Through these
relationships, the series examines themes such as the impact
of aristocratic privilege, the influence of religion, and
the shifts in societal norms. The adaptation is noted for
its faithful representation of the novel’s social and
religious commentary, and it features strong performances
from its cast. It is also recognised for its detailed depiction
of period settings, including the use of historical locations
and authentic costumes, which contribute to its atmosphere
and credibility. Key scenes were filmed at several notable
British estates, including Castle Howard in North Yorkshire,
which served as the primary location for the fictional Brideshead
Castle. Other locations included Oxford University, which
was used for scenes set in the university. Brideshead Revisited
received critical acclaim for its storytelling and production
quality, and it remains a significant work in the history
of British television drama for its faithful adaptation and
complex character portrayals. It is also notable for its evocative
musical score, composed by Geoffrey Burgon.
