A French cellist,
Bricoux was the youngest member of the orchestra aboard the RMS
Titanic. His musical career began with early successes, including
winning a prestigious award at the Conservatory of Bologna, which
set him on a path to perform across Europe. He spent time in
England, where he played at the Grand Central Hotel in Leeds, before
returning to France. In early 1912, Bricoux joined the RMS Carpathia,
where he met pianist Theodore Brailey. Both musicians were later
recruited through C.W. & F.N. Black for the Titanic’s orchestra, boarding the ship in
Southampton on 10 April 1912. Although their time aboard the Titanic
was short, Bricoux and his fellow musicians became part of the
ship’s tragic legacy. After the disaster, French authorities
declared Bricoux a deserter when he failed to respond to the 1913
military call-up. It wasn’t until 2000 that he was officially
declared dead, and in recognition of his contribution, a
commemorative plaque was installed in his hometown to honour his
memory.
