An accomplished English
violinist, Hartley led the orchestra aboard the Titanic. He had
previously performed with the Huddersfield Philharmonic Orchestra
and the Bridlington Municipal Orchestra. In 1909, Hartley joined the
Cunard Line, playing on notable ships such as the RMS Lucania,
RMS Lusitania, and RMS Mauretania. By April 1912, the
music agency C.W. & F.N. Black had enlisted him as the bandmaster
for the Titanic, where he led the ship's orchestra during its
ill-fated maiden voyage. After the tragedy,
Hartley's body was recovered and buried in Colne, Lancashire. The
opening notes of 'Nearer, My God, to Thee', which the band played
aboard the Titanic to calm passengers, were also played at his
funeral.
